The prestigious Shell Eco-marathon, renowned for its focus on energy efficiency engineering, makes its debut in the Middle East, landing in Qatar under the patronage of Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Chairperson of Qatar Museums.

The announcement unfolds at Web Summit Qatar 2024. It is led by Richard Tallant, Executive Vice President of GTL and Managing Director of Shell Companies Qatar, alongside university students who showcased their talents at last year’s Shell Eco-marathon Asia-Pacific and Middle East regional championships.

The Shell Eco-marathon is a renowned global academic program challenging student teams to craft energy-efficient vehicles capable of covering the longest distances with minimal fuel consumption. It catalyzes innovation, inspiring the next generation of scientists and engineers to pioneer future energy solutions.

Participants engage in a comprehensive exploration of design and technology, leveraging their STEM skills to construct ultra-energy-efficient cars. These vehicles are put to the test on the track in competitive races. With three regional championships held annually worldwide, the competitions provide a platform for experienced teams to push boundaries, fostering creativity and novel approaches to enhancing energy efficiency.

Richard Tallant, Executive Vice President of GTL and Managing Director of Shell Companies Qatar, expressed excitement as Qatar prepared to host the inaugural Shell Eco-marathon in the Middle East. He highlighted Qatar’s commitment to innovation and education, noting the country’s world-class infrastructure as an ideal setting for showcasing energy-efficient vehicles.

Tallant extended gratitude to Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa for her support in bringing the event to Qatar, along with strategic partners who contributed to its success. This milestone underscored Shell’s dedication to fostering sustainable innovation in the region. At the upcoming 2024 Asia-Pacific and Middle East regional event in Indonesia, teams from Qatar University, Texas A&M Qatar, and the University of Doha for Science and Technology will compete with purpose-built vehicles, representing Qatar’s burgeoning presence in the global eco-mobility arena.

The Shell Eco-marathon offers student teams the opportunity to compete in two vehicle classes: Urban Concept and Prototype. Urban Concept vehicles resemble standard passenger cars, while Prototype vehicles are ultra-efficient and lightweight, aiming to achieve record-breaking distances with minimal fuel consumption.

These cars are powered by one of three energy sources: internal combustion engine, battery electric, or hydrogen fuel cell. They utilize advanced engineering techniques, aerodynamics, lightweight materials, and innovative designs to optimize efficiency.

In addition to honing technical skills, the Shell Eco-marathon fosters collaboration, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities among participating students. It serves as a platform for young engineers to demonstrate their talent, creativity, and dedication to engineering and sustainability.

Shell Eco-marathon, a flagship initiative by Shell, aims to inspire and support the next generation of engineers, scientists, and innovators in their quest for sustainable solutions. At the Shell booth during Web Summit Qatar 2024, visitors had the opportunity to engage closely with a Shell Eco-marathon vehicle and gain insights into the program.

University students shared their experiences from past competitions, expressing excitement for the event’s debut in the Middle East. Scheduled for the first quarter of 2025 at the prestigious Lusail International Circuit, Shell Eco-marathon Qatar promises to be a landmark event.
