- Aramco has signed over $25 billion in contracts for expanding its gas infrastructure, including the Jafurah gas field and the main gas network.
- The Jafurah gas field, Saudi Arabia’s largest unconventional non-oil associated gas field, holds 229 trillion cubic feet of gas reserves and 75 billion barrels of condensates.
- By 2030, the Jafurah field is expected to produce 2 billion standard cubic feet of sales gas per day.
- Key players in these expansions include Hyundai Engineering & Construction for the Jafurah project and Sinopec for the main gas network expansion.
Saudi Arabia’s state oil company, Aramco, has signed contracts exceeding $25 billion for significant expansions in its gas infrastructure.
These contracts cover the second phase of the Jafurah gas field expansion and the third phase of the main gas network expansion, according to CEO Amin Nasser.
Focus on Unconventional Gas Reserves
Saudi Arabia is focusing on developing its unconventional gas reserves, which require advanced extraction techniques similar to those used in the shale gas industry.
Jafurah stands out as the kingdom’s largest unconventional non-oil associated gas field and is poised to become the largest shale gas development outside the United States.
The field boasts an impressive 229 trillion cubic feet of gas reserves and 75 billion barrels of condensates.
Future Gas Production Goals
Nasser highlighted the potential of the Jafurah gas field, stating that it is expected to generate 2 billion standard cubic feet of sales gas per day by 2030.
This ambitious project aims to position Saudi Arabia as one of the leading national gas producers globally.
Expansion of Main Gas Network
In addition to the Jafurah field, Aramco is expanding its main gas network. This expansion will add 4,000 kilometres of pipelines, increasing the network’s capacity by approximately 3.2 billion standard cubic feet per day.
The enhanced network will connect several additional cities across the country, significantly boosting Saudi Arabia’s gas infrastructure.
Key Players in the Expansion
The contracts for the Jafurah expansion were awarded to a consortium that includes Hyundai Engineering & Construction. The main gas network expansion involves several firms, with Chinese state energy giant Sinopec playing a significant role.
These developments underscore Saudi Arabia’s commitment to advancing its gas sector and enhancing its position in the global energy market.
