Talabat, a Kuwait-born and UAE-based food and grocery delivery platform, acquired 100% of InstaShop from Delivery Hero SE. With this acquisition, InstaShop will now operate as a wholly owned subsidiary under Talabat’s grocery and retail division.

Despite the acquisition, InstaShop will maintain its independent brand identity. This strategy aims to enhance its operational efficiency while leveraging Talabat’s extensive network and resources.

Background of Both Companies

Talabat was founded in Kuwait in 2004 by Abdulaziz Al Loughani, Mohammed Jaffar, and Khaled Al Otaibi. The platform has expanded across the UAE, Oman, Qatar, Bahrain, Jordan, Iraq, and Egypt. In 2015, German e-commerce giant Rocket Internet acquired Talabat for $170 million, setting the stage for rapid regional expansion.

InstaShop, established in 2015 by John Tsioris, is an online marketplace that connects customers with vendors. Operating in the UAE, Bahrain, Egypt, Lebanon, and Qatar, InstaShop has demonstrated strong growth, reaching an annual gross merchandise volume (GMV) of $631 million in 2024—an increase of 16% from the previous year.

Strategic Advantages of the Acquisition

The acquisition brings multiple advantages to both platforms:

  • Enhanced Customer Experience: By integrating InstaShop’s platform, Talabat aims to offer a more seamless and efficient grocery and retail delivery service.
  • Business Synergies: The partnership allows for cross-listing opportunities, optimizing fleet management, and improving logistics operations.
  • Revenue Growth: InstaShop’s strong market presence contributes to Talabat’s expansion strategy, helping it capture a larger share of the grocery and retail delivery market in MENA.

Executive Insights

Tomaso Rodriguez, CEO of Talabat, expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition: “We are thrilled to welcome InstaShop into the Talabat family. This acquisition supports our strategy to expand in the grocery and retail sector while enhancing customer convenience. By combining our strengths, we will drive innovation and set new standards in the industry.”

Nikola Cabarkapa, CEO of InstaShop, shared his perspective: “Joining forces with Talabat marks an exciting chapter for us. We have always focused on connecting users with their favorite local stores, and now, with Talabat’s extensive network, we can amplify our impact even further.”

Future Outlook

With this acquisition, Talabat is set to reinforce its market leadership in the MENA region. The deal not only expands its partner network but also improves its technological capabilities and service efficiency.

As competition in the quick-commerce sector intensifies, this acquisition highlights Talabat’s commitment to continuous innovation and customer satisfaction. Both platforms will now collaborate to provide enhanced delivery solutions while driving growth in the online grocery and retail industry.
